Jazz Band

Jazz Band Intro (ages 4-8)

Designed for children with no prior instrumental musical experience, our Jazz Band Intro class is the perfect way to provide your child with his/her first exposure to the world of jazz.

Over the course of the semester students will become familiar with key concepts integral to jazz music such as improvisation, accompaniment, group interaction, and soloing.

They will also learn about the history of the music and be individually coached on a wide variety of instruments that are used in the genre, including:

  • saxophone
  • drumset
  • keyboard
  • electric guitar
  • electric bass
  • trumpet
  • trombone
  • violin
  • bongos

At the end of the semester students will get to put what they've learned into practice in a group performance for parents and friends.

Jazz Band Jam (ages 9-17)

Designed for children and teenagers who already possess some degree of facility on an instrument, our Jazz Band Jam class gives students a chance to put their skills in action. This class will involve a more in-depth study of jazz history and the skills involved in performance. Students will be grouped into an ensemble and will learn and play the music of jazz greats such as: John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Wes Montgomery, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Sonny Rollins, and many others.
